Prepare your work surface by covering it with newspapers or tea towels to avoid making a mess. Place the pumpkin on a stable surface to work comfortably and safely.

Sketch of the Motif

Before you start with the actual carving, make a sketch of the desired pattern using a dry erase marker. This will allow you to easily correct any errors without leaving permanent marks.

If you prefer, you can also cut out a negative cardboard model, eliminating the eyes, nose and mouth, and place it on the pumpkin to check the dimensions.

Cutting the Top

Start by cutting off the top of the pumpkin to create a lid. Remember to angle the knife at a 45 degree angle towards the center to prevent the lid from falling in.

Once you remove the lid, remove all the seeds and strings from inside with a spoon.
